Rio+20 Event: 1 Billion Reasons to Deliver Clean Energy Access for the Poor

June 8, 2012

Eight19's CEO Simon Bransfield-Garth will join a high-level panel to discuss energy access at Rio+20:

1 Billion Reasons to Deliver Clean Energy Access for the Poor

Background: The world’s current reliance on grid extension and centralized solutions will leave more than one billion people living without access to modern energy services by 2030 according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The IEA has found that in order to deliver on the world’s energy access goals half of all energy services will have to be provided by off-grid clean energy investments. However, current approaches, as well as financial flows are heavily skewed towards large scale centralized power plants and grid extension.

Please join the Sierra Club and some of the world’s leading off grid social entrepreneurs to discuss the importance of this sector in delivering on the world’s energy access goals. These entrepreneurs are seeking increased financial commitments for the sector including $500 million from the World Bank at Rio +20.

Co-organizers: Sierra Club, Carbon War Room, Eight19, Greenlight Planet, Greenpeace India

Speakers: Carl Pope, Jigar Shah, Simon Bransfield-Garth, Mayank Seksharia, Ramapati Kumar

Date: 22 Jun 2012, 11:00 - 12:30

Venue: T-10, RioCentro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
